Fall Architecture Coop

Dear Architecture student: If you’re ready to stretch your assumptions about work and career in an integrated, multi-disciplinary practice, consider SvN Architects + Planners. Our people, our projects, our clients and our culture are unique, and this is a fantastic time to join our growing design team. We welcome applications from students from all architecture programs, with a preference for those who have completed at least two 4-month coop terms already.

Here’s what former University of Waterloos student, now SvN employee Kathleen Fu had to say in her evaluation:

“I completed a 4-month co-op at SvN before my 4B term, followed by a 1-year internship. It’s an amazing environment to learn and build your skills. If you are interested in both urban design and architecture, then you will most likely have a chance to work on both types of projects. I primarily worked on graphics and renderings, diagrams, models, and reports for both architectural projects, and larger master plan proposals during my time there. SvN has a diverse mix of ongoing work that ranges from transit-oriented development to affordable housing, and we also participated in some fun competitions. The office culture is also great; there are social events year-round and everyone there is not only kind and talented, but enjoyable to work with.”

We believe great design requires that all our designers, including our student designers, think critically and contribute ideas to a project, right from the concept stage. During your term, you’ll be an integral member of several teams, responsible for project segments including development of design concepts, massing, plans, elevations, visualization, mapping and diagramming, physical modelling, proposal development/marketing, and contributions to client consultations. While you’ll work closely with principals and associates, you’ll also learn to make responsible decisions and solve problems independently. We strive to ensure that each student grows personally and professionally while with our firm. You’ll participate in Lunch & Learns, and our weekly design meetings where we present and discuss our work over beers (all virtual, for now!)

About SvN Architects + Planners

SvN is one of Canada’s premier integrated design firms with a multidisciplinary team of architects, planners, urban designers and landscape architects engaged with the dynamic social, economic and environmental forces that define and govern where we live and work.

Since our original inception over 40 years ago, we continue to shape the built environment in regions, cities, and towns across Canada and worldwide. With offices in Toronto, Vancouver and in Mexico City (known as SvNMX), we’ve revitalized industrial waterfronts, developed many new forms of affordable housing, designed resilient neighbourhoods, and promoted rural and urban economic development.

We are committed to engaging with projects that put people, the planet and local economies at the forefront of design. We believe the multiple crises we face today are fundamentally design challenges. We provide design-intensive services and believe that ideas and expertise together with optimism and generosity can help make a better world.

Why Choose SvN?

SvN offers a competitive salary, flexible hours and a collaborative design-focused work environment, in addition to many fun social events throughout the year!

Our bright, open, collaborative studio is located at 110 Adelaide Street East, in a historical building near the St. Lawrence market in downtown Toronto. During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic our studio transitioned to a virtual work environment; however, we are looking forward to returning to the studio, while also embracing the new hybrid work environment and the flexibility it provides.
